(trěnsh'ěz,) or LINES OF APPROACH. (Fort.) Ditches cut in oblique zigzag directions, to enable besiegers to approach a fortified place without being exposed to the fire of its cannon. Hence the term to open the T., or to break ground for the purpose of carrying on approaches to a besieged city. [s. 905]
