Fila'ria

[L. filum, a thread.] A genus of Nematoda the members of which live parasitically in the subcutaneous connective ti ue and in the serous cavities. F, ban'croft i, F. sanguinis hominis, F. nocturn a, a nematode worm^ the adult of which inhabits the lymphatic ve els; the larvse are found in the peripheral blood-ve els during the night but not during the day; the parasite is transmitted by the mosquito; chyluria, hematuija, anemia, lymph-scrotum, and other symptoms may be caused by the worm.
