and Geodetic Survey. The establishment of this important bureau was first contemplated in 1807. President Jefferson suggested it 4 in his meseage to Congre of that year. Congre appropriated $50,ooo for the survey. Nothing practical was accomplished until 1811. Then F. R. Ha ler, an English man, was made chief of the survey and commenced operations near New York. Since then its work has progre ed constantly, under Alexander Dallas Bache and other eminent engineers and organizers, It has been a bureau of the Treasury Department. 162
