Lind, JENNY

1820-1887. "Swedish Nightingale." She sang in Stockholm 1838-41 before going to Paris to perfect her art under Garcia. She failed of an engagement at the Grand Opera 1842, and ever after declined all offers from that source. She sang in Berlin and other cities, and in 1847 went to London, where her triumphs were unparalleled; but she abandoned the operatic stage 1849. Her visit to America 1850-52, was under Barnum's management. In 1852 she married Otto Goldschmidt, a member of her concert company in Boston. England was her home from 1856; and she taught singing in the Royal Coll. of Music 1883-86. Her last public appearance as a singer was 1870 at Dü eldorf, when she sang in her husband's oratorio, Ruth.
