Castle was the site of a hunting-box of the Saxon kings, and Harold built the first castle there. Among the interesting events that arc connected with it may be mentioned—the marriage of Henry ‘the Good Scholar’ to his Saxon love, the birth of Edward III., the institution of the Knights of the Garter, the marriage of the Black Prince to the * fair maid of Kent’ (who had had two husbands previously), the birth of Henry VI., and the deaths of George IV., William IV., and the Prince Consdrt (all in the same room).
