jugular

(ju'gu-lar) [L. jugulum, throat.] i. Relating to the throat or neck. a. Relating to the jugular veins. 3. jugular vein. j. foTa'men, a pa age between the petrous portion of the temporal bone and the jugular proce of the occipital, sometimes divided into two by the intra jugular proce es; it contains the internal jugular vein, inferior petrosal sinus, the glo opharyngeal, pneumogastric, and spinal acce ory nerves, and meningeal branches of the ascending pharyngeal and occipital arteries, j. fo a, (i) an oval depre ion near the posterior border of the petrous portion of the temporal bone, to the inner side of the styloid proce , ending at the jugular notch; in it lies the beginning of the internal jugular vein; (2) the hollow in the neck just above the sternal notch, j. notch, (i) incisura jugular is [BNA], prestemal, supra sternal, or interclavicular notch, the slightly concave upper margin of the manubrium stem i between the clavicular facets; (2) the groove in front of the jugular proce of the occipital bone; (3) a groove on the posterior border of the petrous portion of the temporal bone; the foramen is formed by the apposition of (2) and (3). j. proce , a bony prominence projecting from the posterior half of the lateral portion of the occipital bone in the direction of the temporal, its anterior border forming the posterior boundary of the jugular foramen, tu'bercle, an oval elevation on the cerebral surface of the lateral part of the occipital bone, on either side of the foramen magnum, j. veins, see under vena.
