In the U. S., generally synonymous with inn; in England, under certain statutes, it has been defined by the courts as a lodging-house where board is also supplied. Hôtel des In vali des. Paris. Founded by Louis XIV. for disabled and infirm soldiers; built 1671-75. The building is of three stories, 650 ft. long, while the gilded lantern is 344 ft. above the ground. It is adorned with military trophies, statues, paintings, etc. The red granite sarcophagus of Napoleon I. lies beneath the dome.
