GREVY, FRANCO IS PAUL JULES

(1807-91), President of the French republic, 6. at Moot-sous-Vaudrey Jura, and studied law in Paris, becoming an advocate in 1837. In 1848 he was elected by the republicans of his department to the constituent a embly, of which he became vice-president. He vigorously opposed the second empire under Louis Napoleon, and confined his attention to the bar till 1868, when he was returned as deputy for the Jura, and was elected president of the national a embly in 1871, being re-elected in 1876, 1877, and 1879. On the resignation of Marshal MacMahon in 1879, he was elected president of the republic, In 1885 he was re-elected for a further period of seven years, but, on the dis- ‘covery of his son-in-law Daniel Wilson’s dishonest traffic in the decorations of the Legion of Honor, he was obliged to resign office.
