turf, s.that upper stratum of earth and vegetable mould which is filled with the roots of gra and other small plants, so as to adhere and form a kind ofmat; peat, a peculiar kind of dark-brown, fibrous, vegetable earthy substance used as fuel; race ground, or horse-racing: v.a. to cover with turf or sod (A.S.)
