JUNIOR

In the University of Cambridge, two public officers appointed annually to perform various duties. They are ex officio examiners in the senate-house. Their name is derived from another of their duties, viz., that of moderating or presiding in the opponemies, or exercises publicly performed in the schools between under-g.-aduates candidates for the degree of bachelor of arts. These disputations, relics of the old university system, are now reduced to little more than matters of form. Moil rat or is also the name applied to the president, for the time being, of the General A embly of the Church of Scotland, and of the other inferior church courts, the synods, and presbyteries.
