(je-ho'vah.) [Heb., I am.] (Script.) One of the Biblical names of God, signifying the Being who is self-existent and gives existence to others. It was held in such entire veneration by the Jews that they never pronounced, nor even fully wrote it. When reading the Scriptures, they employed in lieu of it the term Adonai (Lord). [s. 502]
