an island fn the East River, New York Oity, ‘which belongs to the City of New York. It is used as a site of city institutions including prisons, almshouses, asylums, hospitals, etc. Its area is about 120 acres. Nearly all the buildings were constructed of granite quarried on the island by convict labor.
