Mohammedan Me iah, expected to complete the work of Mohammed and make things ready for the Last Judgment; character a umed 1881 in the Egyptian Sudan, by the Arab Achmed Suleiman, 1842-1885, whose victorious career resulted in the destruction of Hicks Pasha's army 1883, the capture of Khartum and death of Gordon 1885. Mahmud I., 1696-1754. Sultan of Turkey from 1730. Mahmud II., 1785–1839. Son of Abdul Hamed; sultan from 1808. He effected many reforms, rid Turkey of the Janizaries, and reorganized the army after European models, but lost Greece, and hardly retained Egypt.
