Anchor hold

[Fr. ancho is; Sp. anchova.] (Zool.) The Engraulis encrasicolus, a well-known small fish of the Clupeidæ or Herring family, abounding in many parts of the Mediterranean, particularly on the coasts of Italy, Greece, Spain, and France. It is about four inches long. of a bluish-brown color on the back, and silvery white on the belly. They were known to the ancients, and were used both by the Greeks and Romans as a pickle or sauce under the name of garum. Ancho'vy-pear, n. ( Bot. ) The Grias caul i flora, only species of the gen. Grias, ord. Myrtaceæ. It is a tall tree with few branches, very long oblong leaves, and large white flowers, growing in Jamaica. The fruit, an oval berry, is the size of an alligator's egg, of a brownish-ru et color, and is eaten as a pickle, in the same way as the mango.
