Stay

—In pole line construction, any contrivance for stiffening a pole against a transverse stre . A simple stay, or guy, consists in carrying a strand of wire from the pole to some nearby tree, or to an eyebolt set in a rock, to a log buried in the earth, or a short pole driven into the ground at an angle. An effective method is the use of a guy anchor which may be screwed into the ground to the required depth.
