All these [curates) lyve upon bare Altarages, as they tear me them, which God knoweth are very small, and were wont to lyve upon the gayne of Ma es, Dirges, Shryvings, and soc he lyke trumperye. Sir H. Sidney, State Papers, in O'Curry's Anc. Irish, I. 112. 3. In Scotland, formerly, an endowment granted for the saying of ma es for deceased friends at a particular altar.
