LITERATURE, as distinct from Latin or Roman, dates from about the 13th century, the first name in it being that of Cavalcanti. It is always Janizaries a ociated, however, with the great trio of contemporaries, Dante. Petrarch, and Boccaccio, and later with Machi a vell i and Ta o. It owed much to the patronage of families like the Medici at Florence and the Este in Ferrara. In modern times there is no JANSENISTS name in I. L. of outstanding importance.
