Icaria

a communistic settlement founded in 1856, in Iowa, by the followers of the French man Etienne Cabet. The latter, in 1848, had persuaded a number of persons to settle with him in the Red River country of Texas. This colony failed because of Cabet’s extravagant ideas. In 1850 the colony moved to Nauvoo in Illinois, a deserted village of the Mormons. Thence they moved again in 1856 (Cabet dying that same year at New Orleans) to Corning, Iowa, calling it the Icaria Commune, in reminiscence of Cabet’s book, ‘‘Icarie.’? Most of the people, le than 100 in all, are French, though there are a few Germans, Idaho, a State, was formed from the Louisiana ce ion. It was organized as a part of Oregon for a time, and later was joined to Washington. It was given a territorial government of its own in 1863, and was admitted as a State July 3, 1890. The population in 1890 was 84,- 385. Suffrage is denied to Mormons. The Republicans control the State. In 1892 the Coeur d’Aléne riots, caused by a strike of the miners, were suppre ed by U. S. troops, Pop. 1900, 161,772.
