Nero, LUCIUS

DOMITIUS, 37-68. Fifth Roman emperor; son of A he no barb us and A grip pin a, daughter of Germanic us; pupil of Seneca; adopted 50 by Claudius. He married Octavia, daughter of Claudius, whom he succeeded 54; put to death Britannicus son of Claudius, his own mother and wife, and married his mistre Poppæa; rebuilt Rome after the great fire of 64, which some supposed was set by his orders; and persecuted the Christians, to divert the odium of the deed from himself. His brutal cruelty led in 65 to a plot against him, for which Piso, Lucan, Seneca, and others were put to death. In 68 Vindex in Gaul and Galba in Spain revolted: Nero was deserted, fled from Rome, and killed himself. IMG:content-1523.jpg:[graphic]
