(Columbian College, now Columbian University, Washington, D.C., 1865), Presbyterian; b. in the vicinity of Berryville, Clarke County, Va., April 25, 1818; graduated at Columbian College, Washington, D.C., 1839, and at the Union Theological Seminary, New-York City, 1843; was pastor of the Harmony Presbyterian Church, Lisbon, Md., 1843- 52; of the First Presbyterian Church, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Penn., 1852-81, since pastor emeritus. He was a ociate editor of the American Presbyterian (new school newspaper), Philadelphia, 1856-61. He is the author of History of First Presbyterian Church, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, 1864, new ed. (supplemented by an account of his pastorate) 1881; Social Hymn and Tune Book, 1865; Westminster Bible Dictionary, 1880, 2d ed. 1885.
