(e-li'jah,) called THE TISHBITE, and known in the New Testament under the name of ELIAS, was a famous prophet among the Jews, and gained great celebrity by his miraculous manifestations of the Divine decrees. He is said to have been carried from earth to heaven by angels, abt. 896 B. c. [s. 325]
