City of Scotland 22 m. n.e. of Glasgow, near the wall of Ant on in us; site of victory of Edward I. over the Scots commanded by Wallace July 22, 1298; some 20,000 of the latter were slain. At F. Muir Prince Charles Edward defeated the royalists under Hawley Jan. 17, 1746. Pop., 1891, 16,615. IMG:content-0019.png:[blocks in formation] almost barren. They were discovered 1592, named 1689, settled by the French 1763, taken by England 1765 and 1833, and used as a penal colony till 1852. Pop., 1891, 1,789.
