Greek Fire

Combustible mixture, probably of sulphur, niter, and naphtha, first used by the Greeks at the siege of Constantinople 673. It was poured from caldrons and ladles, or forced through copper tubes set in prows of ve els. The use of similar compounds in modern times has not been wholly succe ful. See FIRES, COLORED.
