Valve Gear

—The mechanism which controls the motion of the valves admitting and exhausting to or from the cylinders of an engine. With a locomotive, a prime nece ity is that the gear shall run equally well in either direction, be reversed rapidly, and be suitable for a high rate of speed and correspondingly frequent alterations of motion.
