Grand duchy of n. w. Ru ia, bounded on the s. by the Gulf of F., on the w. by the Gulf of Bothnia and Sweden. Area 144,000 sq. m.; pop., 1889, 2,338,404. The FINNS (q.v.) came to the country ab. 700, and were conquered and Christian i zed by Sweden 1157-1293. The Reformation was introduced 1528. In 1809, after many wars, the country was ceded to Ru ia, but is governed under its own constitution of 1772.
