GOITRE

or Derby shire neck, so called from its frequent occurrence in Derby shire, is a tumour of the neck caused by an overgrowth of the thyroid gland. In the common form no symptoms are produced other than pre ure effects due to the pre ure of the tumour, but ia exophthalmic goitre the secretion which the thyroid po into the blood is of an abnorma! character and produces rapid pulse, prominence of the eye-balls, tremor and nervous excitability. Recovery occurs in the exophthalmic form in the course of some months, but a quiet life and medical supervision are requisite. [Refer to Cretin.] [s. 370]
