a borough of Pennsylvania, in Schuylkill co. It is on the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading railroads, and is the center of an extensive anthracite coal mining. region. In the Revolutionary army he served as brigadier-general and major-general. After the Revolution, he was elected to Congre of which he was president in 1787. From 1789 to 1802 he was governor of the Northwest Territory.
