1732-1818. English official in India 1750; first Gov.-gen. 1774-85; able and vigorous ruler; impeached for malfeasance by Burke. His trial, 1788-95, revealed the defects of the Indian system of government and called forth much splendid oratory, but resulted in his acquittal.
