William, the ‘Great Elector, who was born in 1620, was the founder of the Pru ian military monarchy. He freed Pru ia from feudal subjection to Poland, and obtained po e ion of Pomerania. He paid great attention to the development of agriculture t ana welcomed French industrial refugees, to whom the rise of manufactories in North Germany was largely due.
