In exogens the two cotyledons are always opposite; in endogens the second leaf developed is alternate with the first. On these distinctions or their absence have been founded three primary divisions of the Vegetable Kingdom, viz., Dicotyledons, Monocotyledons, and Acotyledons. Sometimes, though rarely, there are more than two cotyledons: thus the Boraginacee and the Bra icaceae have four, and the Conifersæ ten, twelve, or even fifteen; hence the term Polycotyledons has been used.
