ALEXANDER JAMES, (dull us,) an American lawyer and statesman, B. in the island of Jamaica, 1759. He emigrated to Philadelphia in 1783; acquired there great distinction as a lawyer, and became an active supporter of the Republican party. In 1791, D. was appointed secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a position he held for several years. In 1814, he became secretary of the treasury, an office he resigned in 1816. D. in 1817.-His son, GEORGE MIFFLIN D., B. in Philadelphia, 1792, was elected to the U. S. Senate in 18:31, holding office till 1833. He next held the position of attorney-general of Pennsylvania, and in 1837 was appointed minister to Ru ia. In 1844, he was elected vice-president of the U. States, and in 1856, nominated U.
