Ash burton, Tord, Alexander Baring

(1774-1848), English banker and diplomatist, became in 1810 the head of the banking house of Baring Brothers & Co., the financial agent of the United States during the War of 1812. In 1842, as special Minister to the United States he negotiated with Daniel Webster the ‘‘ Ash burton Treaty,” which settled the Northeastern boundary between the British provinces and the United States.. Ash burton Treaty was a treaty negotiated between Great Britain and the United States by Lord Ash burton and Daniel Webster at Washington in 1842. It adjusted the boundary between the United States and the British po e ions on the Northeast, the United States securing about seven-twelfths of the disputed territory. The mutual extradition of criminals and arrangements for the suppre ion of the slave trade were stipulated.
