Name commonly given to Heloderma sus pectum, one of the largest lizards of N. America, found in the deserts of s.w. U. S. Heloderma horridum is closely related. IMG:content-0294.jpg:[blocks in formation] Its bite is rapidly fatal to small animals though rarely to man. The poison is alkaline and affects the heart.
