(Shurtleff College, Upper Alton, 111., 1858), Baptist; b. at Ticonderoga, N.Y., Dec. 29, 1819; graduated at Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 1843; became pastor at North Bennington, Vt., 1844; at Rochester, N.Y., 1849; editor of The Christian Times, now The Standard, Chicago, 111., since 1853. From 1863 to 1868 he was pastor of the Indiana Avenue Baptist Church; was from 1877 to 1885 lecturer in Baptist Union Theological Seminary, Morgan Park, Chicago, of which institution he has been a trustee from its foundation. He was present at the opening of the Vatican Council, Dec. 8, 1869, and for some time afterwards.
