Eugene, b. Budapest, Nov. 18, 1899; studied R. Acad. of Music there, winning diploma in vln., 1914, and profe or’s dip., 3 years later; pupil of Hubay; toured as violinist; prof. Hungarian State Cons., 1919; came to America and played as concertm. in Capitol Theater, N. Y., 1921; guest cond. with N. Y. Philh. and Phila. Orch. in summer seasons, 1930; cond. Minneapolis Symph., also appeared as guest with other Amer. orchs., Budapest Philh., etc., and in 1936 was appointed as regular cond. Phila. Orch., sharing baton with Stokowski. Orn’stein, Leo, b. Krementchug, Ru ia, Dec. 11, 1895; composer, pianist; studied St. Petersburg Cons., with Glazounoff and Inst. of Musical Art, N. Y.; début, in latter city, 1911; played as soloist with orchs. in N. Y., Los Angeles, Phila,, Boston, St. Louis, Chicago; early attracted prominence for radical style of comp., but later works more conservative; c. plano concerto, vin. sonata, ’cello sonata, piano quintet, string quartet, choral music, songs, and piano music.
