Bauxite, or Beauxite

Hydrous oxide of aluminium and iron, in varying proportions; named from Baux, in France. It contains 60 to 80 per cent alumina, and is used for the manufacture of aluminium and compounds, first used on a commercial scale ab. 1868. Discovered in Ga. in 1881, since found in Ala. and Ark. Its present consumption in the U. S. is from 25,000 to 30,000 tons a year, 10,000 to 12,000 tons being obtained from home mines.
