SOCIETY is an a ociation which is occupied in spreading the Scriptures. Probably the first was founded in 1710 by Baron Hildebrand von Caustein, at Halle. Tlie impulse of forming Bible Societies came from England, where one was formed for the distribution of Bibles amongst soldiers and sailors. In 1802 the British and Foreign Bible Society was formed. The Religious Tract Society Is another, and In i96i the National Bible Society of Scotland was formed. The British and Foreign Bible Society (which devotes more than one-half of its expenditure to diffusing the authorized English version of the Bible) is the most important and then the American Bible Society which was founded; in 1816. There are numerous Bible Societies in Germany, and one in Ru ia at St. Petersburg.
