Sheets are: 1*: Ropes or chains by which the clews, i. e: the lower corners of upper square sails, such as topsails, topgallant-sails, royals, and skysails, are stretched towards the arms of the yards immediately under them and kept in position. ' 2nd: Rope, or tackle by which the clew of a course i. e: a lower square sail, is hauled downwards towards aft. 3rd: Rope, or a purchase, by which the clew, i. e: the after corner <^f a jib, staysail, or boom le gaffsail is stretched towards aft. 4th: Rope, or purchase, attached to the outer end of a gaffsail-boom, by means of which the after end of such boom, consequently also the after lower portion of the sail is veered or hauled. 5th: Ropes by means of which the inner lower corner of a studdingsail is hauled and kept in a desired position.
