Bart

Barth, or Baert, Jean, 2 French sailor, born at Dunkirk, 1650, the son of a poor fisherman. He became captain of a privateer, and, after some prilliant exploits, was appointed captain in the Royal Navy. In recognition of his further services, he was made commodore, subsequently _receiving letters of nobility. He died in 1702, and is regarded to this day as the typical naval hero of France.
