Howe, Timothy

OTIS, statesman, was born at Liver more, Me., Feb. 24, 1816; received an academic education; studied law and was admitted to the bar; elected to the State Legislature (1845). He removed to Wisconsin in 1846, and became a judge of the circuit and supreme courts of that State in 1850, resigning in 1855; was U. S. Senator from 1861 to 1879, and Postmaster General of the U. S. from 1881 to 1883. He was also a delegate to the International Monetary Congre of 1881. Died March 25, 1883.
