Chancellorsville

(chăn'sěl-lõrz-vil.) a vill. of Spott. sylvan i a co., Virginia, 76 m. N. by W. of Richmond. During the Civil War, a series of desperately fought battles happened at this place. On April 29, 1863, Gen. Hooker having cro ed the Rappahannock, took up a strong position at C. on the next day, where a furious flank attack was made upon him by a Confederate force of abt. 25,000 men under " Stonewall " Jackson, during which Gen. Schurz's division was routed. May 3d, the attack was renewed by Gen. Lee, who compelled the Nationals to retreat, and recro the river, which they succeeded in effecting on the 6th. The Union lo was reported as being 17,197, including abt. 5,000 prisoners. The Confederates reported their lo es at 12,277 men, including abt. 2,000 prisoners. Gen." Stonewall" Jackson was, by mistake, fired at by his own men while returning from the battle of the 2d, and died on the 10th. [s. 164]
