(pŭr.) [ L.; signifying by; used in many phrases, as per force, per annum, per cent., .] (Chem.) It is a contraction for hyper, and is employed as a prefix to denote very or fully, or to the utmost extent: as in peroxide, which indicates a substance oxidized in the highest degree. [s. 696]
