Mannite

CH(OH)6. Mpt. 166° C. White crystalline substance, found quite widely distributed in the vegetable world. It is an alcohol, and constitutes most of the manna of trade, prepared from the dried juice of the manna ash. It is found in celery, in rye bread, and can be made from glucose by the addition of hydrogen. It has a sweetish taste, and with nitric acid furnishes the powerful explosive nitro-mannite.
