TRUCKS

(1848-1915), American physician; b. New York City. He graduated in 1871, from the Oollege of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, but, on being attacked by tuberculosis in 1873, he removed to Saranac Lake, N. Y. There he combated the disease succe fully in his own person and founded a sanitarium for the treatment and cure of incipient tuberculosis, especially among the poorer cla es. He was among the first to adopt the open air method of treatment and soon became recognized as the foremost authority 4n the world on the treatment of that formidable disease. The Saranac Laboratory that he established in 1894 was the first of its kinds in this country. He was chosen president of the A ociation of American Physicians in 1905 and of the Congre of American Physicians and Surgeons in_ 1910. He was also the first head of the National A ociation for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis.
