Greatest of Greek sculptors. His master¬ pieces were the colo al ivory-and-gold statues (forty feet high) of Minerva at the Par the non, and of Zeus at Olympia in Elis the latter being counted one of the wonders of the world. Born, b. c. 490; died, 432.
