HOLLAND, JOSIAH GILBERT

He was trained as a physician, graduating from the Berks hire Medical College, and oo at Springfield, Ma ., but Medicine failed him as a livelihood, and he turned to teaching and journalism in ‘Yarious parts of the country. In 1849 2 became one of the editors of the ‘Springfield Republican and subsequently owner of that journal. In 1870 he ‘established the magazine known as the ay, then under the name of Scribner’s Monthly, and edited it with great succe to his death. He became known also as a novelist, poet and @ ayist, and earned popularity through a multitude of contributions to the urnals he edited, afterwards collected od published in book form.
