(root.) [Goth. rot. ] (Bot.) Same as RADIX, q. v. -(Etymol.) A radix, radical, or primary form of speech; they are of two kinds, R. demonstrative (properly pronouns), and R. predicative, the latter including all words which expre some material or sensible idea. -(Mus.) The fundamental note of any chord.(Arith.) A number or quantity which, multiplied by itself a stated number of times, is equal to a given number, or, in other words, produces a higher power. [s. 778]
