Apart from the usual college courses the institution has departments of civil engineering, music, art, and oratory. From that time he had devoted himself to telegraph line construction and the organization of telegraph companies, in which work he ama ed a large fortune. He was active in Republican politics serving in the state a embly (1862-63), and the state senate (1864-67). He founded and liberally endowed Cornell University.
