Temple

(tém'p'l.) [From L. Fig. 628. templum. An edifice dedicated KNIGHT TEMPLAR. to some deity. The word is generally confined to buildings erected for heathen worship-with the exception of that at Jerusalem, called the T. The earliest 7. were merely an open spot, with a rude altar of earth and stones; or an inclosure like that of Stone henge. The Egyptian T. were remarkable for ma ive dimensions, the cell, however, being always small. Those of Greece were of the most magnificent description, and were the examples after which Romans erected theirs.-(Anat.)
