Herculaneum

Ancient city of Camp an i a, 4 m. e. of Naples, under the modern town of Resina; originally a Greek colony; buried by the lava of Vesuvius 79; discovered 1719. Excavations are now at a standstill, and have never been conducted systematically, owing to the difficulty of working through the lava. The finest bronzes of the Naples Museum and many other interesting antiquities are from this site.
